Pokemon Fan Finds Rare Misprinted Game That May Be Worth Thousands

In 1998, the first Pokemon games made their way to America as Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue. Now, decades after the games were released, a Pokemon fan has discovered that they left Pokemon Blue unopened in their closet for decades, and it may be worth thousands.

Reddit user Sausagenpeppers recently shared a photo of their unopened Pokemon Blue (via Automaton), which still has a K-B Toys price tag on it.

That would have been an exciting find of its own, but when Sausagenpeppers shared a pic of the other side of the box, it revealed that this is a rare misprint of Pokemon Blue that has Pokemon Red's text on the back of the box.

Misprints like this one are highly sought after in the Pokemon community, and this game may turn out to be worth thousands of dollars if Sausagenpeppers decides to sell it. Pokemon's most devoted fans have shown a willingness to pay a lot of money even for unofficial merch, like the Charizard-Shaped Cheeto aka Cheetozard, which sold for $72,000 earlier this year. Last May, a UK man was arrested in possession of over $300,000 worth of stolen Pokemon cards. And there are reports that the Japanese mob has been using some Pokemon cards to launder money.

As for the primary franchise, its popularity shows no signs of slowing down. There's a new Pokemon TCG expansion coming in November, and the next game in the series, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, is slated to arrive on Switch and Switch 2 on October 16. Pokemon Go has also launched a Tales of Transformation season, while Scopely has laid out the game's events for September.
