After months of speculation, it was announced during Friday's Nintendo Direct that Dragon Quest VII will be the next entry in the long-running JRPG series to get a facelift; it's coming to both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined will be released February 5, 2026, and preorders begin today on the Nintendo eShop.
Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined is a full-scale remake of the classic 2000 PlayStation title, looking very similar to Dragon Quest XI with updated visuals. The game follows the story of a young hero from the peaceful island of Estard, who--along with his friends Kiefer and Maribel--discovers ancient ruins that unlock the ability to travel to lost continents sealed away in the past. As players journey through time to these forgotten lands, they must resolve the tragedies that led to their destruction and restore them to the present, gradually rebuilding the world piece by piece.
It was 10 years ago, during the 2015 Nintendo Direct, that Dragon Quest VII was announced to be coming outside Japan for Nintendo 3DS, with the new subtitle Fragments of the Forgotten Past. The 3DS remake is an abridged version, as much of the content from the original was cut, such as the intro, to shorten the length of the game.
Square Enix is also working on another high-profile seventh entry: the Final Fantasy VII Remake series. The story scenario for the third and final part was completed in early 2025, marking a major milestone in the trilogy's development. In May, the company announced that all three parts of the Final Fantasy VII Remake saga--including Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which launched in 2024--will be released on the Nintendo Switch 2. While the final installment is still without a release date, development is underway as the series moves toward its long-anticipated conclusion. And we now know when Remake Intergrade is launching on Switch 2.
With Dragon Quest VII still months from release, you can revisit the series by playing the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, which launched last year. But before that, mark your calendar as Square Enix is set to release the Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake on October 30.
